As a rich Swedish family celebrates the birthday of his patriarch Alexander (Erland Josephson, shouts and whispers), news from World War II outbreak reaches his remote Baltic Island – and Happy Humor turns into horror. The family descends to a state of psychological devastation, brilliantly evoked by the palette of tarkovsky arrests of luminous ash washing the dark landscape in his home.
